Every BMW engine employs 100 years of engineering excellence and a range of cutting-edge technologies as standard. And with our latest generation of BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol, diesel and hybrid engines cleaner and more efficient than ever, each offers its own unique advantages.
So, whatever your requirements, you can be confident that you will be driving one of the cleanest, most efficient cars in its class, whilst still receiving our iconic BMW driving performance.
We have a compelling choice of EU6 compliant petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric engines available today, boasting impressive power output, low fuel consumption and reduced emissions.
However, different driving styles and conditions are suited to different engines. We have created these films to help explain the distinctions between them, and what you need to think about when deciding which BMW engine is right for you.

Thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics technology, BMW TwinPower Turbo diesel engines deliver a spirited response, impressive fuel economy and low emissions.
All diesel engines boast the following BMW innovations: progressive turbocharger technology, variable turbine geometry and common-rail direct injection.
Our diesel engines employ two highly effective systems which when combined, eliminate up to 90% of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.
BMW diesel engines are made primarily from lightweight aluminium and are available in 3, 4 and 6-cylinder variants.
On average, a diesel engine emits 20% less CO2 than a comparable petrol engine and uses 20% less fuel. Allowing you to drive further with lower emissions.
BMW BluePerformance technology significantly reduces NOx emissions produced by our diesel engines. In addition to the standard diesel particle filter and NOx catalytic converter, our more powerful diesel models also include a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) cleaning system, which uses an odourless AdBlue® solution to chemically convert NOx into harmless nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O). These technologies further optimise the emissions of the diesel engine.
The following models have the SCR technology with AdBlue® as per October 2017 (Europe, Turkey, Japan, Korea):
Thanks to our consistent focus on developing new innovations, the latest generation of BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engines are more fuel efficient, more economical and more powerful than ever before.
Our 3, 4 and 6-cylinder engine variants are built with the latest innovations: cutting-edge turbocharger technology, fully-variable VALVETRONIC valve timing with double VANOS valve control and high precision direct injection.
The BMW Plug-in Hybrid range combines a powerful petrol engine with an electric motor that is powered by a lithium-ion battery, providing an all-electric driving range at low speeds, with the flexibility of a combustion engine for longer journeys, offering the best of both worlds.
As a reflection of our commitment to sustainable mobility, we now offer the widest range of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the UK.
Since 2006, we have reduced the energy consumption required to produce a BMW by 35% and reduced the waste produced by over 80%.
BMW Group has been named the world’s most sustainable car maker for the last three consecutive years, according to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI).
63% of the electricity sourced for BMW Group Production worldwide already comes from renewable energy sources.
All BMW i models employ our innovative electric drivetrain – BMW eDrive – which uses an electric-only motor, or an electric motor combined with a highly efficient petrol engine, to maximise performance and minimise emissions.
The electric-synchronous motor has been specially developed for the BMW i3 – producing an impressive 170hp and 250Nm of torque – with ZERO driving emissions.
The BMW i production facility in Leipzig uses 70% less water than a conventional factory and is powered by four wind turbines to ensure 100% CO2-free manufacturing.
The highly advanced drivetrain of the BMW i8 combines an electric motor that powers the front wheels, with a powerful 3-cylinder petrol engine that drives the rear wheels.
The 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission is a central component in the BMW EfficientDynamics measures. Thanks to the narrow spread of gear ratios and minimised rev intervals, it allows an especially high level of gear-changing and driving comfort, whilst also reducing fuel consumption.
Plus, with Launch Control, your BMW will reach maximum acceleration from a standing start. Give the Dynamic Stability Control button one short press, set the gear lever into position ‘S’, depress the brake firmly and kick down the accelerator pedal – now release the brakes and find out what torque really means.
