With great pride, BMW i has continued its on-going AllBright partnership with a new initiative called Pioneering Through The Ages – The Blue Plaque Tour. With the purpose of celebrating great female pioneers, this day-long event shone a light on the often-overlooked women in history who have not only achieved greatness in their respective fields but also continued to inspire new generations today.
Sprinkled across London are Blue Plaques, which are awarded to people of great achievement. To help guests find the five specific plaques awarded to pioneering women, a fleet of BMW i3s vehicles escorted the AllBright members and guests.
To ensure that each pioneering woman and her amazing achievements were fully appreciated, BMW i and AllBright invited a number of brilliant women currently working in the respective fields and also creating much needed change.
Renowned physicist, feminist and pioneer for women’s rights.
Founded the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) and campaigned for women’s right to vote.
Discovered that DNA molecules had two forms and that DNA was created in a helix-like structure.
Pioneered family allowances for mothers and children, pensions for widows, and the right for women to vote.
As a mathematician and computing pioneer, Ada wrote an algorithm that is now regarded as the world’s first piece of computer code.
To complement the tour, BMW i organised a panel event. This gave guests a chance to ask the modern day female pioneers from the Blue Plaque Tour about their unique experiences. Hosted by Claudia Winklmen, guest speakers included Christina Okorocha & Rumbi Mupindu, Co-founders of Vamp; Dr Sunetra Gupta, Professor & Epidemiologist; and Frances Scott, Founder & Director of 50:50 Parliament.
