NEW LOOK BMW i8 COUPÉ FORMULA E SAFETY CAR.
22 March 2019
In the fourth race of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in Mexico City, BMW unleashed its new BMW i8 Coupé Safety Car, and it looked stunning. Built in the form of a real racer, its new livery has been designed and built to celebrate the close relationship between the BMW i8 Coupé and the BMW iFE.18 race cars.
The design process involved a genuine collaboration between Formula E and the BMW Motorsport design team, which has meant that many of the iconic design features of the BMW iFE.18 can be found in the new safety car.
Michael Scully, Head of Design BMW Motorsport, said “We have translated the themes found in the design of the BMW iFE.18 to the very different proportions of the BMW i8 Coupé. This livery gives the safety car a new dynamism and a bold level of expression appropriate to racing in the streets.”
BMW i has been closely associated with Formula E as ‘Official Vehicle Partner’ since Season One and has provided the entire fleet of safety vehicles ever since. The BMW i8 Coupé Safety Car has been modified with many BMW M components to cope with the specific demands of motor racing.
