M GOES UP A GEAR.
15 July 2020
With the development process for the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé nearing completion, BMW M is very close to launching a new generation of iconic sports cars. Compared to previous models, there is a significant increase in performance, thanks to improvements to the M TwinPower Turbo technology and a host of new features such as an M-specific suspension setup and newly developed straight six-cylinder engines.
“With each BMW M automobile, we put motorsport technology on the road,” says Markus Flasch, chairman of the board of the BMW M GmbH. “The new BMW M3 Saloon and the new BMW M4 Coupé embody this principle in a particularly intensive way… And results of the test drives show us that the new model generation is significantly superior to that of its predecessors in terms of performance.”
PROLIFIC TESTING.
Thanks to a raft of new innovations including drive and braking technology, the new M models are undergoing a more intensive testing process. Traditionally, the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring sets the yardstick for the perfect interaction between drive and suspension technology in every situation. This time, however, the driving dynamics tests, which are performed under racetrack conditions, are more varied than ever before; from the BMW Group testing centres in Miramas, Southern France, to the Swedish town of Arjeplog.
RAISING THE COMPETITION.
The new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé will be offered as Competition models with 510hp and an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Compared to previous Competition models, this is an increase of maximum output by 60hp. Dirk Häcker, head of Development M Automobiles and BMW Individual explains, “with the Competition versions of the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé, we are addressing maximum dynamics in regards power development and transfer – initially with classic rear-wheel drive and, at a later date, also in conjunction with the latest version of our four-wheel drive system M xDrive.”
